Tal Tamir: Makers of Norias
Date: 1938
Photographer John D. Whiting (d. 1951), who also worked as a tour guide, photographed norias (water wheels) erected by Assyrian refugees by the Khabour river near Tal Tamir (Tell Tamer). These constructions were used for irrigation purposes. Whiting also photographed a steel water wheel erected by the League of Nations by contrast, noting that the wooden wheel was “primitive”.
