Damascus: Gold and Silver Thread Manufacturers

Date: c. 1840

Sir John Bowring (d. 1872) finds that Damascus and its surrounding areas manufactured 75,000 drams (approximately 133 kg) of gold and silver thread annually. See also: Embroiderer with Silver Wire.
